It is due to different minerals dissolved in the water, the breakdown of which are present depends on where you live. Mostly it is calcium based compounds (which cause lime scale in sinks and tubs) that are naturally occuring in the water table.

I think it depends on the source of the water and the kind of pipes it's flowing through.
