British rock was better in the 60's and '70's (Kinks, Who, Rolling Stones) american rock was better in the '90's (Nirvana, Surgury, JSBX)

British rock in the late 60's, 70's but American rock for the 80's early 90's, now it don't seem to matter as their are no great new rock bands about in the the true sence of the word!!

My personal opinion is American rock is better than British.

Both are great I personally think the good thing is they peak at different stages British 60s 70s American 80s 90s now though I think its the British turn again! But hey my favourite stuff comes from both at all times!

mate there is no compitition british defintly. Lets compare a few
The Beatles = motley crue
The stones = Bryan Adams
Led Zeppelin = jon Bon Jovi
Black Sabbath = POIson
iron maiden = WASP
the who = cleadence clearwater revival
man this list could go on for ever with britain winning hands down, all the american groups are poor copy cats that wear too much spandex and have too little talent

Modern mainstream rock seems to concist only of American Bands and Bands pretending to be American anyway. that's market forces for you.
But rock music is best experienced live. If your favorite band comes from more than 50 miles from your house, you're not trying hard enough (although apologies if you're from the western Isles or Siberia or something).

In general over the last 30 years...
American heavy metal better than British
British Indie rock better than American (apart from Pixies)
British music as a whole better than American. To me Beatles are pop not rock.
ACDC are from Australia. Apart from the current lead singer (their first one died) who is a geordie.

It depends on the era but in the 70s, Brits ruled. In the 80s, Yankee rockers had it. 90's, I'd say it was the Brits again, at least for the early part of the decade. Late 90s, again it was the Yanks, but we're shifting again I feel now that the 00s have hit. Muse ROCK!!!
