First, Indies refers to India. This is the area that western Europe was trying to find a better sea trade route to rather then going around the south tip of Africa. Explorers (starting with Columbus) headed west from Europe looking for this route but stumbled upon the Caribbean Islands. The explorers and their sponsors decided to call them the West Indies as apposed to the east India, the area for which they where looking for.
