There is a lot of speculation on this regarding talented people. Oscar Wilde and Walt Witman did have gay relationships (according to Wikipedia). But I would say more talented/brilliant writers/artists were prone to mental illness than unusual sexual preferences. Take Edgar Allan Poe for example!

Also:

Writers Sylvia Plath, Virginia Woolf and Ernest Hemingway, painter Vincent van Gogh, and musician Kurt Cobain all committed suicide.

Painters Frida Kahlo and Georgia O'Keeffe, and musicians Cole Porter and Charles Mingus suffered from depression.

That is not true. But great talents are most occupied with mental production. Sexual activities are secondary thoughts for most of them.

they probably used their creative side as an outlet for all their pent up frustrations at not being able to be who they really were.
