new zealand is a huge junkyard...they dont seem to know how to build anything. Seriously the citys and roads all messed up the cheap designed buildings that dont flow with "look" of the city.. These people are to cheap to actually get a loan out and do things right the first time..look at any school in new zealand Poor Design.. it sickens me to live in a beautiful country ruined by poor design..nothing seems to be thought out?does anyone agree

Hm... I used to think some of Canada was... and I've lived in both. Now that you mention it, I think most of the cities in NZ are more attractive than some of the cities in Canada, but they can't compare to France or Austria or germany or some such place. On the whole though, I'd say you definitely CAN get uglier, western countries still, and easily (architecturally speaking now). I hope I'm not offending anyone, but if you want to see real ugly, try Salford, Greater Manchester in the UK, or the Northern outskirts of Birmingham, or the eastern approach towards Runcorn, UK. Those are spectacularly ugly by design, and I've seen nothing in NZ to even come close to it (again, sorry to any residents there - but I'm afraid you'd even sadly agree, wouldn't you?).
But you know, it wouldn't take much to make NZ's cities more attractive to look at. First thing, take those power poles down and go underground with the wiring. That should make a huge difference. And then, widen those roads and put those speed limits right; I'm not sure if you've noticed, but the speed limits are ridiculously HIGH - if you so much as try to come close to the number noted on the signs, you'll fly off the road like a rocket! I live next to a street which is 50m long and ahas a stop sign at both ends - and the speed limit on it is 100km/h!?! Hello-oh??? Is that crazy, or what? And the worst thing is: You get tourists in motorhomes trying it, because they come from countries where the signs actually mean something...!

I'm from NZ but I'm living in Aussie...I have to say I did notice how badly the roads were planned when I came home last. Mum and I decided the town planner must have been drunk. The road will be three lanes wide and then all of a sudden BAM!, it's down to one lane with no merging lanes or warning signs. And some of the houses around the motorway near the airport look like an ad for "Once Were Warriors". Not real inviting...
In saying that, there are some beautiful areas too. But it's the natural stuff that's pretty.

If you think about we are a very young country compared to other western countries and have a very small population. Our country simply does not have the need, population of demand for these things.
