I am looking to buy a new bed, and I think that the highest quality mattress would be a good investemnt.

As fasr as I know so far, the best quality mattress you can get is pocket sprung underneath with a memory foam topper.

But I also know there are new types of springs, and mattresses which are completely foam with no springs.

Please let me know your experiences good and bad with matresses. If you have back pain and they helped, whether it was the best purchase you ever made! etc...

I'd also like to know some websites that provide high quality mattresses at competitive prices, and are UK based. Preferably I would also like a long guarantee, I have seen 5 year guarantees but are there 10 year, 20 year or longer ones?

many thanks

treat infamy - thanks for the great answer. latex? Sounds weird.

I see what you mean about the foam being too clingy but i thought that would only apply to completely foam matresses, not pocket sprung with a foam topper.

I ahve tried some in shops but its impossible to really know without actually sleeping on it.

V Sprung Mattress

Although I have no personal experience of either of these (I sleep on a futon!), I have been advised by several colleagues the way to go is to have a sprung mattress and then have a memory foam mattress topper. When I finally buy a ‘normal’ bed, this is the option I will be going for!

My girlfriend and I just bought a new bed and mattress. She suffers with Muscular Dystrophy and often has restless if not sleepless nights. I have for years suffered with back pain in the mornings (not sure if it's due to our previous mattresses, the lifting, or my lifestyle otherwise).

Anyway, having tried a few, we agreed that the memory-foam mattress seems to draw us in and we felt quite claustrophobic as a result.

Do NOT go for the Silent Night 'Mira-coil'. I was told by a salesman that all they did was turn the frame of a normal mattress through 90 degrees and hey-presto! the new miracle in bedding.

We ended up going for a no-turn latex pocket sprung by 'Rest Assured'. The latex sits on top of the springs cushioning the bed that much more but without the clingy sensation of memory-foam.

We've had this bed for a month now and apart from work days we just don't want to get out of bed it's that comfortable.

I suggest you try before you buy. Go to the bed stores in town and try out the different styles. Listen to what they tell you but if they seem to be pushing a certain style of mattress, it's probably a staff incentive going on.

We checked several sites to get a good price and found it at www.bedsonlegs.co.uk

We had been given prices anywhere from around £500 to over £1000 for the same mattress so it's certainly worth looking around. Look out for price matching aswell.

Good luck in your search.

Hiya - we have had our mattress for about 2 years, of which I thought was perfect when we first bought it.
My back and hip started hurting and I just couldn't seem to get comfortable - then my sister told me about the Memory foam mattress topper - well I bought one and they are brilliant - no problem since - as they are on top of your original mattress it also saves the wear and tear of your other mattress. I would recommend them to anyone..http://www.dunelm-mill.com/default.asp
Smart Foam Mattress Topper - Mine was £110.00 for a double
and it's about 2 inches thick. If you go to the web site and enter Smart Foam but the price as gone back to the original I bought mine a few months ago when a sale was on.

Tempur-Pedic mattress is a good buy, here's why!

Tempur-Pedic mattresses were the first to use viscoelastic material while making a mattress. It solely makes memory foam mattresses and is the market leader. Its products are regarded as the benchmark, so that every producer compares their memory foam mattress with Tempur-Pedic. So, is the Tempur-Pedic the excellent memory foam mattress available? Opinions differ; while some attest their lifetime of backache disappeared after they slept on one, others state the mattress that wilts after just some time. Moreover the memory foam sold by Tempur-Pedic is a lot firmer than its rivals.

When I injured my back, I got a floatation mattress. It's like a waterbed that's stuffed inside of a regular mattress. It was wonderful! Unfortunately, they're not very comfortable when two people are sleeping on it.

I've slept on the foam mattresses and don't like them at all. I don't move around at all when I sleep on them, and I wake up stiff and sore.

You can buy a "memory foam" matress not a topper. They are fab, you know the kind NASA invented. They are very supportive and react to the weight of your body and do really go back to their original state when you get out of bed. They are expensive but worth the investment.I believe about £1,500 pounds for a double size. Look at www.tempur.co.uk for information and buying.
