It is the switch built into the phone, that is activated when you pick up the handset. To "flash" you would momentarily hit that switch - not long enough to hang up but long enough to briefly interrupt the line. It is the same thing that the "flash" button on a phone does now.

"Flashooking" is using the "hang-up" switch-(the switch that is pressed when hanging up the phone) to switch calls using calling waiting. most new phones have a "Flash" key which does this-on some lines using the Flashhook will give you a second dial tone-ie: if you have two lines-to initiate another call...Movermike...
