When you have truly enjoyed a book, or magazine article, do you ever write to the author to tell them? Who have you written to? Did they reply?

I did this when I was a student, and remember being quite excited to receive a letter in return. Nowadays, I use email.

Dean, that's great. An autograph on paper seems more real than an email...

Mr. Baxley, I looked at your website and I'm very impressed. It's also kind of you to asnwer all fan mail, and to encourage young authors.

DreadC, Wow, a signed print of the cover, what a treasure! I think writing to relatively 'undiscovered' authors is more fun... to say, 'please write some more of that!'... He probably treasures your letter, too. My sister once wrote to JRR Tolkien, back in the 1960's, before LOTR had become a big hit in North America. She received a hand-typed and signed letter. Hmmm... I wish I'd thought of doing that!

wiwat, I've wondered about that too. Perhaps when an author becomes a bestseller, then the staff might have to answer the mail?

Ginger/Vi, Nice souvenir.

bill hantz, Thanks for the info.

Call Me Babs, Perhaps your feedback helped that author with their next book.

I don't know if this is quite what you're looking for but I wrote Terry Moore, the writer & artist of the graphic series "Strangers In Paradise" ,after the first volume came out. I wasn't expecting a reply, just wanted to say how promising I found the series & how much I was looking forward to the coming installments. Turns out that I was the first person to write a letter about the series & Terry Moore wrote me a very nice letter with a drawing on it & also sent me a signed print of the cover. A wonderful surprise & a class act.

Hi there. I'm an author (yes, a REAL one) and I get email from readers on Yahoo almost every day. Email makes replies easy, quick and efficient. I'm not sure I would be able to answer everyone if it meant using an envelope and snailmail.

The following email came just this week and it's like many that I get. Suffice to say, I was pleased to answer, as I do all of my fanmail.

"Hey there I just wanted to say how much i loved your book. It was such a good read. I especially loved your foreword that was dedicated to up and coming authors. I so want to be an author when i grow up and any advice you could give me would help greatly. Thank you! Arielle Kinne......"

Thanks for the question. Good luck with your reading!

I use email also and am not really surprised when I get an answer because authors really enjoy the feedback they get from their fans. If you like sci-fi/fantasy go to Baen's Books and sign in, from there you can either go to the chat room or the Bar and converse not only with other people, but sometimes the authors themselves. Have fun and enjoy!

I remember that many years ago, I wrote to an author because I thought their ending was lame. I never got an answer. The entire book held my interest, but the ending was just too abrupt and disappointing.

I'm sorry to tell you 'No' but it's a good idea. If I were an author, I would be delighted to reply the letters from those interested in reading my book(s). In the meantime, I wonder if they have time to reply or answer some of our queries.
