As long as its a natural shell and not those painted ones then its fine. The painted ones have been known to kill some hermit crabs. Different types of crabs like different types of shells though, since hermit crabs are taken from the wild they like the ones that are from that part of the world.

Have been selling hermit crabs for about 11 years and yours is an interesting question. In all that time, I find they do not care much about color but about the shape and go for conical or round shells as opposed to conch type. The only things we suggest to customers are not to use artificially painted shells because they are not porous and to make sure the entrance hole for the replacement shell is a little bigger than the shell currently being occupied. Sometimes in a group of 15 or more crabs (because we generally keep at least 30+) we find 5 crabs scrapping over a favored shell. Hope this helps you.

We have three hermit crabs. There are tons of shells in there with them but the only ones they have gotten in are the natural ones, a brown one painted like a football and a black one with a red flame on the side. So maybe they like the nuetral colors better?

Are you doing a science project? That is one of the suggested ideas on my sons science fair paperwork, lol!

I have crabs that perfer the same type of shell every time they change, others that pick different types every time. My crabs always choose unpainted shells. I have found a preference for pearlized natural shells, but I think that is more likely to be a weight issue.

No, they go for the fit. If you
like a certain color, then provide
a shell in that color. I've seen
nature shows where the crabs
were using discarded cups and
cans.

No, color doesn't matter. What matters is the shape and size of the opening.
