Practice on an incline mat. When you feel you are falling, its time to jump and jump hard! Keep your arms straight and strong and push off. Keep arms by your head at all times!
Arch a Little, but if you over arch it is a BIG mess.
Bend your knees slightly, arch a little bit, and push you shoulders open as much as you can. Then using your stomach, back, and arm muscles, snap your body back to a hollow position, pushing off your hands, and land on your feet on the floor in front of the board/mat.
Put it all together you should be able to do a back handspring.

Couple things:

Pull your arms back hard and as far back behind your head as you can when you swing your arms up. You also need to work on your flexibility in your shoulders and back. If you aren't flexible enough or pull back hard enough, your elbow will be up next to your forehead rather than than behind your head when you land on your hands. This makes your arms support the weight of your body with their muscular strength rather than the natural rigidity of your bones because your don't have a straight line from your chest to your hands. It also prevents your shoulders from absorbing the weight of your body.

Second of all, when bending your legs to push off, it should feel like you are in a chair, the weight should be on your heels. You should be pushing up and BACK, not up and over.

Finally, develop shoulder strength so that when you land on your hands, you are better able to absorb more of the the weight in your shoulders and also pop up on your feet more easily. When you push off your hands back on to your feet, it is your SHOULDERS that should be doing most of the work, not your biceps/arms. When you land your hands, your shoulders will naturally be pushed down toward your waist. Shrug your shoulders hard and upwards towards your ears to pop up onto your feet. There should be little bending in your arms when you land on your hands. Strengthen your shoulders by doing a handstand against the wall and shrugging your shoulders, such that your body moves up and down. Do 100 of them per day. Practice the 'popping/shrugging' movement by facing the wall and jumping up and forward, hitting your hands against the wall and 'shrugging'/pushing off the wall with your shoulders. Remember to keep your arms up by your ears, not in front of you like a walking zombie. Your chin should also be down.
