I was playing a game on my PC and a blue screen popped up saying"dumping physical emeory". What in the world does that mean and what causes it?

Thats the "blue screen of death" which means it just crashed. This is common in older Windows OS like 98, ME and NT. Just reboot your pc and hope nothing is corrupted.

Recommend upgrading to XP.

This is a very common problem with all versions of Windows platforms that go back past Windows XP Prof.. If you are lucky the blue screen, "saying dumping physical memory, means that a "critcal error" occured while you were playing a game.

Your pc will shut down and you will see a blue screen, "dumping physical memory", because the memory is corrupt.

I have used every platform that Microsoft has ever made. An when it happen to me the dumping of physical memory, the pc dumped and shut down.

Just restart your pc an all should be fine, becasue the system has the ability to fix the "critical error that accured while in use.

Hope this is the case for you as I never had to reformat an it has happen many times.

Does not happen with my current platform, Windows XP Prof.

There's about a million causes for the blue screen of death. Could be everything from a bad video driver (software that makes your computer talk to the monitor) to damaged physical memory to worse. Don't reformat the computer yet as suggested in another post--- mighty drastic step and it might not be warranted. Instead, wait till it happens again and capture the first 2 lines of the dump screen. It'll say Stop etc etc and maybe something like IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_TO or so forth. Don't worry about all the 0a 01 2b numbers, just the top 2 lines. Write them down, post them here and we can do an actual analysis instead of just guessing wildly.

The fixes for this could be everything from a minor software update or settings change all the way to a new computer so get those details! You can PM me with them, too.

If it only happened once, that's nothing to really worry about.

You have just incountered the blue screen of death.

2 thing may be wrong

1 your memeory is corrupted and need new modules.

2 you need a new mother board for your computer.

either way you need too get a new computer because that one is
messed up and you will get that screen alot in the future.

The reason I know I used too get that too and found out the mother board some of the circuits were fried.

You may need to download video drivers specific for that game - or perhaps newer drivers for your graphics card - specifying the OS helps - NT had many BSOD's - 2000 had fewer and XP the fewest - based on my experience.

The only way I found to fix the BSOD is to reformat the computer. If you have data you don't want to lose, well, take this as a lesson in the importance of backing up your data on a regular basis.

If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.
