I know many of you will say the Bible, and I agree, but I'm looking for fun casual reading.

How do you quantify something so quality based? I hate top lists because it seems so ridiculous to be able to compare something like #2 to #4. You can say the top books based on how many books are sold, you can't really do it based on which ones you feel are better or not, especially for tops. Five that are among my favorites: A Confederacy of Dunces, Cat's Cradle, Brave New World, 1984, and the Bible(greatest piece of pop fiction, EVER) I'm a big fan of the dystopian novels. Stephen King is also a guilty pleasure.

The Nine Tailors - Dorothy L. Sayers (or anything else of hers)
Tristram Shandy - Laurence Sterne
The Hobbit - J.R.R. Tolkien (and the Lord of the Rings)
Any Harry Potter, but I like the earlier ones better than later ones.
The Secret Garden - Frances Burnett (sp?)

I'd like to put in a plug for Donald Westlake's Dortmunder series - some of his other stuff is too wierd, but Dortmunder makes me laugh until I cry! I also like Rita Mae Brown's Mrs. Murphy books (co-written by Sneaky Pie Brown). They are wonderful, but her serious stuff (without Sneaky Pie) does nothing for me. And Elizabeth Peters' books about Amelia Peabody are priceless - but again the earlier books are better than the later ones.

Yeah that's more than five. What book lover can stop at five!?
