Gout is one of the many forms of arthritus. In my case the symptoms are very severe pain in the joints of the left big toe and it gets very hot.The Doctor tells me it is caused by uric acid crystals in the joint. There is a tablet which cures it very quickly but if you have stomach problems you are not allowed to take it.If you are subject to frequent attacks you may be prescribed Allopurinol.Gout is very painful and can attack almost any joint in the body toes and fingures being the most common. As others may tell you Rich Foods can precipitate attacks, but not the same foods for all people.I cannot take Red wine or grape juice yet I can eat raisins and sultanas.I have to be careful the amount of orange s or juice I eat.I sometimes know if I am about to have an attack as I get a tightness in my Breastbone before it hits next day.It really is very very painful and can be very hot and the skin over the joint get red and shiny.

Gout is a form of arthritis. It is actually a disorder of the blood and can be very successfully treated with diet. See The Fragrant Garden by Valerie Worwood for a cleansing diet that should clear it up - the diet is arduous but not as bad as being in pain all the time.

When you have cleared it up then you can introduce the eliminated foods again one at a time and that way find out what thing caused it.

As far as diagnosis, you are experiencing pain and swelling in joints, probably in your feet.

Gout is due to a build up of uric acid in the joints (usually characterised by the big toe being affected but can affect all joints!). Arthritis is due to inflammation of the joints.
Self diagnosis is a risky business it would be better to let a doctor diagnose and then you can get proper treatment

Well, it really should be looked at by a doctor. And yes gout is related to certain types of arthritis

Father - Gout is not an allergic reaction - it's a build up of Uric acid that can be triggered by rich foods such a red meat, liver, alcohol, but shellfish can be problematic as well.

You can't really self diagnose. Go see your doctor while you have the pain. make sure yopu tell him how many times you had it, how long it lasted and if any particular foods brought it on.
or Try NHS direct on 0845 46 47, they'll give you some pointers
