Codeine will suppress a cough but it's not recommended for long term use as there are plenty of side effects (constipation etc). Also I think it might be habit forming if used for long and it is also dangerous to drive etc as it impairs your reflexes just like alcohol.
Some gentler things you could try:
Make sure the air in your room is warm, breathing cold air can trigger a cough.
Try sleeping in a semi-sitting position by propping your upper back with a couple of extra pillows.
Keep a glass of water by your bed and take a sip whenever you wake up.
If your house has a spare bedroom, you might consider moving there until your cough goes away if it will put you out of earshot from the other people.
If you get a really bad coughing fit, it can help if you sit up. Also sleeping on your front might help if you commonly sleep on your back.
It is very nice of you to be concerned about the other people when you're sick and I hope you get better soon. Be sure to take some extra vitamin C to help this happen. Lots of garlic is great, the more the better.

If you have a persistent cough that isn't improving after a week or so you should see the doctor.
That said, coughing is good as it brings up what doesn't need to be in the body.
A night time cough is sooo annoying. Hard to sleep, headache and rib ache from coughing all the time.
Before you go to bed you should spend about 10 minutes inhaling steam. Use a towel over your head and keep your face near the water...mind not to accidentally touch face on the water!
Take slow deep breaths. You will find that you'll cough more at first as you begin to breathe the steam in..but this will settle.
It is the best relief I've found for persistent coughing.
Other remedies may help such as night nurse etc. to help you sleep but check the instructions as it may not be suitable for you.
Hope this helps!

I've just recovered from a nasty throat infection so I know all about this one. About an hour before you go to bed have some panadol extra fast. Just before you go to bed have a nice hot drink of hot water mixed with honey and lemon or just a hot water and lemon whichever you prefer. You may want an extra pillow because you wanna sleep with your head slightly raised. Make sure your chest and neck are well wrapped up at night- sometimes I wear a scarf to bed cos I always find when I have a cough if a bit of cold gets to my chest it's nasty and makes me cough lots. If your nose is blocked aswell a bit of olbus oil on a tissue tucked in your pillow is great too. ok and most importantly- theres loads of infections going round at mo so if your had it for over a week go to the doctor cos you might need antibiotics- keep drinking lots of hot drinks and take some extra vitamin c- works wonders!- get well soon...

By using cough medicine. Do you have Asthma? Asthma can
cause you to cough a lot. Does your chest feel tight and hard to
breath? Do you have Allergies? If so when you go to your Dr.
explain to him/her how exactly you feel. Hopefully he'll send you
to a Allergist Specialist. If your 18 and over call to your nearest
Baz and Allergy Center and ask if they need a referral, if not and
your insurance pays for the service then have yourself tested.
Oh I have Asthma thats why I'm asking cause the coughing does
it all the time when it getting worse and I just can't stop coughing.
My daughter coughs when she is playing sports, she too has Asthma.

Either sip water throughout the night; take some cough medicine;
go to doctors for antibiotics or cough into pillow to muffle sound!

Make a small mixture, in equal quantities, of honey and vinegar. Sip it a little at the time. It will ease your throat.
Another very old remedy is to boil a whole onion in some milk. Drink the milk when cool enough. I also eat the onion.
Both do work.

Day nurse/Night Nurse tablets are the business for a cough. The only thing I've found that actually does suppress it.
