He's probably struggling to survive. A turtle's shell is part of its skeleton. Without the shell, the turtle would be a puddle of goo, unable to move to get food. Even softshell turtles use their shell for structural support.

Dead because the shell is attatched to the turtle. It's kinda like ripping out your spine.
