Ok... so I was talking with my friend today and she rreally made me think... Why is there such a huge stigma about drugs.. .but not so much about alcohol?? I mean I personally am ok being around people who are drinking or me drinking myself, but I do not want to be around people who are smoking marijuana or cigarettes or anything... So she was asking me what's the real difference? they are both a drug... and I was thinking well you could start off with pot or something.. but it could move to harder drugs... but then again alcohol can lead to alcoholism... I dunno... so basically what makes alcohol and ok and drugs not ok? I have a strong stance against drugs, but am ok with alchol. is that hypocritical or what?! What do you think about drugs vs. alcohol?

Many, many people have used alcohol as a recreational drug with no alcoholism being the result.

Not so many people have used marijuana without some form of addiction or escalation of the high. It is a drug that takes away any ambition and leaves the user without any ambition to produce.

Both have side effects that are not pretty.

Alcohol and cigarettes are considered to be socially except able . Cigs are going down in popularity though, but drinking isn't just something people do to party. Serving drinks has been done for thousands of years for all types of social occasions. Even Jesus turned water into wine. All types of people, from all stations of life (rich or poor) use alcohol. People can become addicted to alcohol, but it takes a long time, unlike Meth which you can become addicted to from the first use. Also, Alcohol isn't made of crazy chemicals like other hard drugs that can kill you very quickly. In the end, the difference comes down to your motives.
If you are drinking to just get wasted, then there is no difference between drugs and alcohol.

No one stoned on pot ever picked up a barstool and beat the crap out of everyone in the room. Alcohol makes people mean a lot. Drugs make you lazy or psychotic.
I have been drunk several times and done a variety of drugs in the 60s and 70's.
Drinking made me feel sloppy, stupid, loud, and very vulnerable. Drugs made me feel witty, and sensual, and invincible! Cigarettes made me feel dirty and trashy.
I never got hooked or sold into slavery. I imagined some WILD stuff!!I had a lot of sex! I remember, I think.
Alcohol/drugs make people think they can drive just fine, eat later, take care of themselves and kids, and are NOT addicted. It is a lie.
My personal opinion is that all of it should be legal and extremely taxed and closely regulated. You want to drink fine-pay $20 for a beer that is cold and clean. You drive your car-you go to jail-no BS-very severe penalties.
You want to smoke pot, ok, it is $20 for a cigarette, and it is very potent, and clean. $1 for the pot and 19 in taxes.
The taxes pay for advertising against abuse, and pay for free rehab centers for anyone who wants to quit.
If it was legal, I would probably smoke pot once in awhile, and drink a glass of wine every few days. I might celebrate vacation by eating a few peyote buttons, and painting-or dancing naked in the woods-or both.
As it is, even wine turns to vinegar on me.
I would not be an addict, because I am a responsible person who loves my life and my family. I know the tragedy of a drunk.
Alcohol is legal because the people who make the laws drink. Pot is legal where people who make the laws smoke it.
You cannot make people lay off drug and alcohol. Even prisoners figure out how to rot fruit to make brandy. Even in prohibition, there was a LOT of drinking, by a LOT of otherwise law-abiding people.
Yes, they are hypocrites.
