we recently filed for bankruptcy and our income has shrunk to approx. $800 per month. we have 4 people in our house and i recieve ssi payments. i'm wondering if it would be worth my while (since i hate to try to contact social security) to look into having my ssi payments raised.

This is a tough question to answer without more information. First, are you on SSI (Supplemental Security Income) or SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance). My second question is who are the 4 people in the house?...a spouse?...dependent children?

SSI is a set amount that is awarded to the person with a disability. That person's spouse or dependents cannot get SSI unless they also have qualifying disabilities. SSI may be reduced by earned or unearned income. If your income has changed, you should report it to the Social Security Administration (SSA) and they may increase your SSI payment. The 2006 federal SSI amount is $603 for an individual and $904 for a qualifying couple. Many states pay an additional amount called a State Supplemental Payment (SSP).

If you're on SSDI, your benefit amount is usually based on your work history and is different for each individual. SSDI is not affected by unearned income but can be affected by earned income. In some situations a spouse and/or dependents can be eligible for SSDI also. If you're on SSDI, someone you live with may also be eligible and should apply at the SSA office.

Filing for bankruptcy does not affect one's benefit amount, but a change in your income may. If you post more specific information here, I will try to offer a better answer.

It depends on what you are receiving the SS for: death of a child's parent, disability, retirement, etc as that will matter! Your best bet is to go to the ss website and check it out.
