What is Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime ("metal opera") about? What story is told?

A heroin addict named Nikki gets caught up with an anti-corruption cult headed by Doctor X. Nikki becomes an assassin that's paid with heroin. His job is to kill political and religious figures. His safe house is a church occupied by a preist and a nun (named Mary) the priest took off the streets of New York and made into a sex slave. Nikki has a crush on Mary. The operation gets discovered and Doctor X tells Nikki to clean house (kill the priest and the nun). Nikki is able to kill the priest, but goes back to plead with Doctor X. During that time Nikki tries to get off his heroin kick. He goes back to Mary, but finds her dead (she commited suicide). While he is with Mary the cops arrest him for the murder of Mary. That's why he is at the hospital. Mindcrime II is Nikki's story of going after Doctor X.
