Emo is a subgenre of hardcore punk music. Since its inception, emo has come to describe several independent variations, linked loosely but with common ancestry. As such, use of the term has been the subject of much debate.

It's like soft Goth,
My Chemical Romance ROX OUT LOUD!!!!
LOL!
Emo and Goth are WAYYY different,
Goth's are like Punks, they don't give a crap one way or the other, they wear ALOT more black than Emo's or Punks do.
Emo's are depressed, care more about homework(kinda like "nerds in black" in other words),what people think, and CRY ALOT!!! They wear black, but mix it with red, pink, blue, or green.
I'm more of an Emo, I was always picked on b/c I wore black, and often stereotyped as a Goth, but half the school doesn't know what the difference between the two are.
For better refernce, here's a couple links ....

I'm emo/goth sure there's a change and I'm a mixture of each... My dad calls me emish, I'm looking forward to that to seize on haha... Emos are first-rate the kind rocks together with the style in song and absolutely emo is created through tough lives or pasts nevertheless, this does not imply we're continuously unhappy and depressed we do smile!!

OMG I AM EMO AND I DON'T CUT MY WRISTS!!!!!! (sorry i just hate when people that ask "what is emo?" and then some of their answers are like "emo is a bunch of whiners who cut themselves" cuz it ain't true.
Ok by the looks of your music taste... and the glasses... it sounds like you kinda can be "emo" but just cuz u listen to that music doesn't always make you an emo. emo as in the "emo" music is kinda short for emotional like emotional lyrics and to be emo you don't have to be depressed. (im not) and kinda all emo is now is a fashion or trend... well thats what it is turning into at least.. ok i don't know how to explain the EXACT difference between goth and emo to you but believe me there is a difference. emos and goths listen to different music. i think goth music is a little more harder and darker and just goths tend to be alot darker then emos.... (i could be wrong tho) and goths are said to wear like ALL black. emo music is awesome in my opinion lol and well their music tends to be emotional. and they don't wear all black all the time. they do wear colors. ask your friend what emo means to him. and maybe then you can understand alittle bit more... and Dashboard confessional are said to be really emo. (tho i don't find them all that emo but Chris whatever his last name is from Dashboard confessional supposably helped popularize the word "emo") MCR rox!!!! I LUV THEM! P!ATD is awesome too! i hope i helped you some!! i tried!
and also i think emo guys=hot!!!♥

was a subgenre of hardcore punk, that focused more on emotional aspects of every day life instead of politics and social changes. The summer of 1984 was known as the Revolution Summer, when emo emerged in the hardcore scene. Husker du's album zen arcade is thought to be the first emotionally based album, while rites of spring was the first emo band. Emo ended ten years after it began, however, it spawned many sub genres and influenced even more. Emo lead to screamo, post emo, and emo violence to name a few. Post Emo lead to what is labeled by most of society as emo.
-goth is darker than emo

emo stands for emotional. Typically, it's usually used to describe someone who is well, overly- emotional.
Goth isn't quite the same thing. Goth kids are out to make a statement by wearing all black- trying to stand out of a crowd.

Emo was a style of music created in the mid '80s. . . Two bands called Rites of Spring and Embrace took punk rock in a different direction. They had the same punk rock sound and vibe like all of the other bands, but integreated more personal lyrics and were extremely emotional during live performances raw, powerful human emotion. Rites of spring were famous for their intense live shows. Instruments were broken and out of tune, drums were ripped, and the band dripped with sweat caused by the mass amount of power they put into their music. This new style of punk rock was different enough to be classified as something other than punk. A new term was coined. Emotional Hardcore was the new term that described this new powerful subgenre of hardcore punk rock that these two bands had created. More and more punk bands started to experiment with this new genre. Over time, the term Emotional Hardcore was shortened to the term Emocore. And then, over more time, it was shortened even more to the word Emo. This is considered to be First Wave Emo. It spanned from 1984 to 1994. Yes. "Emo" was at one time a musical subgenre of hardcore punk rock. Not something the kids who wore girl pants and eyeliner called themselves. Not something you would be called after cutting yourself. Not something you would ever call a living person.
As time progressed, there were different bands forming and trying to replicate the sound of the emo genre.Around the late '80s and early '90s, bands such as Indian Summer and Heroin formed. They weren't exactly under the punk scene as much as Rites of Spring were, but they still had that hardcore emotional performances and songs. (Indian Summer was known for building up to a climax in most of their songs; the turning point of emotion in their performances.)
Then came the second wave of emo. Many say that Sunny Day Real Estate were the pioneers of second wave emo. I would have to agree on that one. Sunny Day Real Estate was influenced by previous emo bands but played a much more melodic and somewhat depressing style of music. Unlike previous bands influenced by emo, Sunny Day Real Estates signed a deal with Sub-Pop records, the label that had success with more popular bands such as Nirvana and Soundgarden. Sunny Day Real Estate was also promoted in the Rolling Stone. Sunny Day Real Estate got out into the general public more than any other band influenced by emo in the past. This is perhaps what started the corruption that is what emo is considered today. Sunny Day Real Estate got out to the people, and thus bands tried to mimic their style. Different sounds of music were played, but the sad tone was kept. Then came bands such as Thursday, Jimmy Eat World and Weezer. Jimmy Eat World was at first considered an "emo" band back when emo wasn't such a broad term. But then, with their 2001 release of "Bleed American", they pretty much took all of their emo influence out of their music and went mainstream. They changed their image and style of music, but were still considered to be an emo band. This is where the third wave comes in.
Dashboard Confessional was formed. Dashboard Confessional took the sad tones of Sunny Day Real Estate and turned it into something much more depressing and emotional. Songs most of the time about love, not being able to get a girl, etc poured a type of emotion that gave the band a whiney look. That's when bands such as Hawthorne Heights started forming. Influenced by Dashboard Confessional's pansy-like style of music, they were considered to be emo. The mainstream success of such bands is what made the term emo explode out into the world and become what it is known as today.
