There are similarities and differences between the cello and violin. They both hold the bow in the nearly identical way. The fingering on the neck is similar, but the gaps between the notes is larger on the cello. As other people said, the strings are different notes, but that is able to be learned very quickly.

If you don't mind some side advice, I'd have your son stick to one instrument. While sampling different instruments is a good idea, it doesn't help him master an instrument because he's spending all of his energy that should be focused on one instrument is spread between many instruments. If he wants to be good (great) at an instrument, he needs to focus on that one. I've done a lot of alternate instrument learning, and it caused the level of my saxophone skills (primary instrument) to be lower than it should be because of me spending time on other "less important" instruments.

Each instrument requires practice to handle the way it is played. Some are very similar to each other, and others quite different, but no 2 are exactly the same. Violin and cello are quite similar, but require different practice.

The real advantage in taking up a new instrument is that the basic music theory and reading skills have been developed already, making a new instrument a matter of mechanics and physical training.

there are things in common between cello and violin
violin strings are GDAE
cello strings are CGDA
the cello has a deeper more mellow sound. Like a tenor singing voice. He doesn't have to hold up the cello like the violin. But the cello bow is heavier and it takes more strength for the bow.

no, a cello is big, and deeper and you hold it between your legs. A violin is held on your should/chin area and it is higher in pitch. They are not alike.

I wouldn't think so...a cello is more like a bass where a violin is more like a guitar/banjo
