I have had no problems with the things I've purchased on e-bay. Some of my purchases have been in the $600 range.
I have heard of some real horror stories however... Just gotta be careful and it is important to check the feedback others have given that particular seller.
If a seller does not have good feedback... I will avoid them

Its not so much ebay, its the sellers on Ebay you have to worry about. A lot of it is trust and thats why I suggest you look at the sellers history first. If he/she has a great score and a lot of possitive feedbacks, then most likely you should be fine. also lookto see if the seller offers returns incase of broken item. Ive been a member for awhile and so far had one item (new in package) come in broken and the seller paid for the return and gave me a full return credit and was very sorry for the problems we had. Even though the item I won was broken, I gave him the best feedback because sometimes things like that do happen thats out of everyones control

Look at the seller's rating that will give you an idea of weather or not they can be trusted. You are able to take the matter up with ebay if an item doesn't work but ultimately it is up to the seller to fix the problem... there are no guarantees. For the most part I have had great luck on ebay

ALWAYS check out the rating of the seller before you bid and READ THE ENTIRE AUCTION PAGE.
most ebayers ARE honest... read all the fine print, look closely at the pictures, but BEST, read their feedback. people who get negative feedback have a history of lying, cheating, misrepresenting their items, etc.
If someone has a ton of good feedback and little or no bad feedback, then chances are you are dealing with someone who is being honest. But again, read the entire auction before you bid to make sure you understand ALL of their terms and conditions, and if you have any questions - ask BEFORE you bid.

You really don't, you just have to take a gamble that the seller is trustworthy... most people on there are honest, and sell what they describe.. check the feedback on the seller. If they have a lot of negative then don't' buy from them...

Read the feedback rating of the person you might bid from, the higher the percentage the more trustworthy the seller.

eBay has written policies for returns. If you don't like what you've gotten, there are safety nets you can use to get your money back. You also need to read what the seller's policy for returns is before you bid on or buy the item.

Always check feedback. Use paypal. Some big name companies actually sell products on ebay. Use common sense.
