It just depends on the child. My daughter is 5 months old and just started teething. But my son (now 2 1/2), didn't cut his first tooth until he was 11 months old, and then four others came in within a couple of weeks.
Children can drool and fuss and gnaw for a long time before actually getting a tooth. The "tooth buds" under the gumline can itch long before they cause pain, so babies who are not officially teething yet can have symptoms of teething (drooling, gnawing) with out having pain and with out having teeth breaking the gum's surface.
See the below article for more information about teething.
Good luck!

Of my kids:
Baby#1 first tooth 8 mo.
Baby #2 First tooth 3 and a half mo.
Baby #3 first tooth 3 mo.
Teething can start up to 2 months before the tooth actually cuts through.

My son started teething around 3 months, but his first two didn't break through until 5 months. Apparently they can teeth for several months before they come through. He;s now 7 months and his third one is now coming in.
