gueroes, look at my other hockey questions..i wasn't being b i t c h at all, dude.
Just wondering if the refs legally can't touch the players till they fall on the ice, cause I've never seen them separate the players till they are on the ground with the jerseys ripped off.

Colin brings up a brilliant point.
Players will goad and F with a player little
by little to evoke a penalty....look close...
lots of small cheap shots and slamming..
then the player being F'd with overreacts,
and gets thrown in the box for a power
play.
Dennis Rodman made a career out of doing that in the NBA.
Works every time.......

BTW, I'm totally shocked at all the chicks
that dig hockey.
I see them at the games, but , boy, they
sure know their stuff on these boards.
Right up there with the guys in knowledge
and love of the game.
Good for you, all you chicks out there!

Because it is a prt of the game and they will get hurt if they do. It is not part of their job.

The linesmen usually stand around and wait to what happens, for instance if two players look like they want to go at it the officials will stand back to see if they start throwing punches. If the players just circle each other and not do anything the linesmen will step in and will stop it before it ever begins.

The main reason why the officials stand back and wait until the players end up down on the ice is simply for the official's own personal safety as they don't want to be hit the players punches.

They don't stop the fights cause that is what makes hockey exciting and keeps the fans coming back for more. and besides If they didn't want the players to have the odd fight here and there they would take it out of the sport. plus the fights bring in power plays and things so one team always will get an advantage to a fight part of the game

Would you want to stick you head in between Larocque and Phaneuf? nough said there.

Also like has been said above fighting is a part of the sport and as long as there are 2 willing participants the linesmen (it's linesmen who break up fights not refs) will let it go, unless one of the fighters indicates that he's had enough, or they fall to the ice.

Another note is that it actually has to become a fight in order for there to be fighting penalties. So if the lines break it up too early all you'll ever get is roughing or unsportsman calls.

Refs can stop a fight from starting if play has stopped. I don't think anyone has seen any ref allow two guys to start a fight after play has stopped. If the scuffle starts while play is on, then they'll let them beat the crap out of each other. remember. Hockey is a Blue Collar man's game.

Fighting is a part of the game we have loved over the years and we don`t want it to be eliminated. The refs wait until the fight is over and the game continues. Breaking up a fight means taking one man out and then you leave the other free to take a shot. Don`t change this aspect of the game...PLEASE.

I hate cheap shots but a fair hockey fight is part of the game.

YOU try getting in the middle of two guys on skates punching the crap out of each other. Oh, and by the way, YOU'RE on skates too. Do you see the difficulty in that now? And fighting in hockey is good for the game. What other sport has a good fight like that this frequently?

Its easier to seperate them onthe ice than while they dance trying to land a punch. Hockey is moving away from the fighting but it will still always be around. The enforcers are there to protect the skilled players and you need them to exact vengenance if someone oversteps himself and tries to hurt your good guys, you have to teach them a lesson. More so most of the time the fight starts because plaers are trying to draw penalties toget the power play. Soemtimes it works and sometimes it starts a fight.

I think too many refs have been hurt trying to get in the middle. So they wait until the guys fall on the ice and at that point it's pretty simple to break it up.

Linesmen don't stop fights until the players are tied up and can't throw punches because there's too much risk of getting hurt.
You'll see this more when the players are on the ice because there's no flying skates either.

It's not to entertain the crowd. / If they could (without risk) they'd stop ALL the fighting.

It's simply not worth the risk to themselves.

Refs don't stop fights, linesmen do. They stand around and let guys go hoping they tire themselves out plus if the linesmen jump in too early they'll get a few stray punches by accident.

Who quotes a lame-o comedian like Jay Leno? Come on!
