i had a gold fish that died a few weeks ago. it swelled up around his gills, like he swollowed something that was too bid. then stuff started coming out of his sides and it was kind of bloody. well. i had a beta in a smaller tank, so i put him in the golf fish tank after it died. now the same thing is happening to him. i put him back in his original tank but he hasn't gotten any better. was it something in the water? i also have snails, like a lot of them. there are probably close to 100 in the gold fish tank, but i don't think they would have anything to do with it.

Sorry about your fish and I'm affrade that your other fish will most likely die too. You need to take your tank all apart and clean it out with soap and hot water( Make sure you reins it good). Wash everything - stone(gravel) anything that was in the water with the fish. It sounds like ick witch is common with gold fish.
Gold fish are very hard to keep as they are a high bred carp. The fancer the gold fish the harder they are to keep. Gold fish are messy and the tank gets contaminated very fast if it isn't already astablished. The tank needs to be cleaned more often with gold fish as they are very dirty fish. You should only feed gold fish once every other day and very little at feeding time. Your tank size has a lot to do with how well your gold fish will do. If you have a 20 to 50 gal. tank you need to only have two fancy gold fish in them. That will give you about two weeks in between cleanings. You need a gravel filter ( this will build up with bio mater-its called a bio filter) a carbon filter on the back of the tank and a water vacuum to clean up uneaten food and waist at the bottom of the tank. Make sure you don't vacuum below the gravel. You can start with one gold fish and add another after two months. You shouldn't have more than one or two snails in your tank. The snails put out a lot of waist that will palute the water-that plus the waist of the gold fish will kill any fish. If your using a gold fish bowl you will need to change the water every other day. You will also have to let the water get to room temp. before you put the fish back into the bowl. One of the main reasion for fish dying is they are over fed. You only have to give you gold fish a few flakes of fish food every other day. You can also check with any pet shop that sells fish. There are a large number of books available at the Library on gold fish. Good luck with your fish...

Anything that is in the former fishes bowl needs to go bye bye. Most likely there was a virus in the water and your snails currently have it too. You can go to your local fish store and see if they have medicine for your beta. I have found that beta's can last a long time but sorry to say I don't think it's going to pull through. With any tanks you want to change your water regularly and make sure it is balanced. Fish are fun but they do require a little work.

Personally, if a fish of mine was sick in a tank, I would not transfer another fish (the Betta), to the same tank. It is best to not do that. I'm sure other people can tell you what went wrong, I have no idea really. But when you have a sick fish, it is best to keep other fish out of that tank until it has been throughly cleaned and restored. Sorry about your fish. Good Luck ! :)

After a while the snails can poison the water, maybe get rid of a few and put new water in.
