Ovulation is the moment in which the mature ["ripe"] ovum cell is released from the ovary and into the fallopian tube. It takes from a few seconds to a couple of minutes at most; some women can feel a slight pain {"mittelschmertz"} when they ovulate. Once in the fallopian tube, the ovum remains viable [fertilizable] for up to 24 hours before it begins to deteriorate and ultimately die if there aren't any spermatozoa present and fertilization doesn't take place. However, since sperm can live for up to five days in the woman's reproductive tract after intercourse, a pregnancy can result even if sex took place a few days before ovulation.
