Yea..they do get a ton of money but it just goes to show that we as a nation/people hold athletes in such high regard over those who should be really acknowledged for their skills and paid more than they earn. Such as teachers, and fire fighters!

It's a question of market forces. At the very top of the game the amounts paid to players are huge - but then the revenues generated by those players for their employers (i.e. the clubs) is similarly huge. If I were capable of generating that sort of revenue for my employer I'd certainly want that level of remuneration!
As clubs have increasingly been operated as businesses over the years (with shareholders wanting to see a return on their investment) this is all rather inevitable - whether you believe this is a good thing or not is a different question!
Also, don't forget that the huge salaries are paid to a small proportion of players. £5k a week is still a lot of money per annum - but plenty of businessmen make more (some of them out of the football business), and a footballer's career is still fairly short.

I think I should get paid more than they should for what I do, however, my company doesn't get millions of dollars a day for my services. If the athletes don't get the money, where do you think it'll go? It'll only go to the corporate heads which you don't see and already have too much money. In this capitalist society, where people are willing to pay money for all sorts of things, their salaries won't go down.

All "professional" athletes are paid too much. And when they feel that they're cheated out of their billion dollar contract so they can't buy a new car or put in a ridiculous shaped pool, they whine. I thought they were playing for the love of the game?

If there is that much of a demand for these players, and there is, then technically they aren't paid too much.
Its capitalism, supply and demand - buying and selling walking commodities.
- a better question might be "are societies priorities screwed up because we pay athletes millions to move an insignificant little ball (or puck) while others starve to death or die from preventable illness?"
To that I say yes.

No sports player should ever earn more than 100,000 in a year. Personally i think that is too much also. If they truley play for the "love of the game" then they shouldn't want alot of money to play.

I think some are and some aren't. You also have to realize that the figures you usually see for the amount of $$$ 'footballers' make include endorsements, about 25% of their income.
