my above ground pool water has turned green what should i do?

how do i get rid of the green and stop it doing it again when i cover it for the winter

Water clarity depends on three things.
1/ Proper water chemistry: Ph 7.2 -7.6, Cl 1.5 -3.0 and Ta 80-120. If one of these is off, your pool will go green or cloudy. Fix it and there's no issue. You don't mentio what your readings are nor pool volume so I can't help there.
2/ Filtration: Clean the filter at least on a weekly basis, more often when you get into an issue that you have now.
3? Keep the pool itself clean. Vac it. Stuff lying on the bottom eats up your chlorine reserves in the water. It costs you money.
That's it in a nutshell. It's easy to keep a pool crystal with a little attention in the week. You let it slide just one day and ...it costs you money to fix and time. Get your chemistry dealt with now, before you cover. Once it's good go ahead and close the pool. The chemicals you toss in from a typical winterizing kit will keep the pool pristine all winter as long as your cover stays on.

First purchase a chlorine testing kit and some algecide. You can probably get both really cheap at a pool and spa store.

1. Backwash your filter (depending on the type of filter you have, you may need to add diatomasious earth, a white powder)

2. Use the testing kit to check your chlorine and PH levels. Make sure you keep the water at the appropriate level.

3. Read the directions on the algecide bottle and add the appropriate ammount.

Run you filter for 48 hours and your water should clear up. If it doesn't completly clear up (or if it is reallly Green) vaccum the pool after the 48 hours and add more algecide.

First depending on size clean pool with vac .15000 Gal pool will require 2 1/8 pounds of shock or about 18 oz. You use chlorine tablets large put about 4 into the skimmer. Never put chemicals into bottom of pool .Will damage liner or discolor.Run pump for several days .Water should start to clear. You can add a couple of chlorine tablet few day later if water still cloudy. Keep it completely covered. Otherwise have you considered salt water in the pool, far less maintenance and generally easier to stay clean. Our pool always goes green if it hasnt been covered up. Also if it is green and you do swim in it, the water soon clears up. Try it.

All you have to do is make sure when you cover it in the winter that it covers securly and also I had an above ground pool and it had a filter if yours does'nt then maybe buy one or get a new pool that does and I wish you the best of luck

You've got algae. Get some algicide as quick as you can off the internet (poolstore.com in the UK is good if you are from the UK!). You need loads though, more than you think. Then overwinter as usual. I hope this helps xx

I'm no pool expert but i would think a pump and chlorine would fix that alternately you can drain it and clean it every few weeks.

you will have to drain it and clean it, put plenty of chemicals in the water, there is no guarantee that it won't turn green, but, you are going to have to clean it before next year anyway.

Clorine is the fix. Vacuum first and then purchase shock. Its a clorine treatment for the pool.
