Everyone is responsible for their actions. That goes for the man and the 14 yr old. In some States you can only use deadly force to protect life. In others you can use it to protect property also. It, most likely, will depend mostly whether the man felt threatened.

He should have called the police. Killing somebody for stealing a car would be like killing someone who misspells "stealing" "stold" (no such word, probably "stolen") and "controversy"...You can only use deadly force in self defense when your life is in jeopardy. You say the man ran out of his house shooting at a kid attempting to boost a car. The shooter should be tried for 2nd degree murder, if not 1st degree murder.

People who prey on innocent people deserve whatever happens to them. I like the laws in Texas that allow citizens to use deadly force to defend themselves, others AND property.

If someone steals a six-pack of beer and the convenience store clerk blows his head off, I cheer the clerk. Unfortunately, many states would charge the clerk.

Just based on what you've written, it sounds like the man may have overreacted. Since I don't know the entire story, I don't really feel comfortable commenting.
