Birth control pills are basically estrogen. Having high amounts of estrogen throughout the month (by taking the pills) keeps you from ovulating (or releasing an egg from your ovary). So the few different colored pills are basically placebos (or sugar pills with no hormone) that cause your estrogen to drop and then you have your period. You need those placebos to have your period and thus cleansing your system. But to answer your question, that is just your period, it happened because of the drop in estrogen. So it most likely happened from not taking the pills and also taking the placebo. You'll be fine, just try your best to take the right pills on the right days and you won't have this problem.

Birth control is simply hormones for that control your period to make it regular. The week of odd color pills is generally a Placebo, sugar pill. You have not taken it in 4 days so youhave started your period. Now is the screwed up part. You will need to take your birth control through, so continue the placebo just like you would the week of your period. You should not start the hormones while on your period. This is similar to when you first started b/c. You were most likely told to take them the day after the end of your period then, same as now. It may also take 2 or more months to get your period back to a routine.

It's no big deal. As long as you take your pills in a row skipping to the inactive pills or having your period start early or late will not hurt you.
