1. You are no longer in charge of your appearance. The photographers, designers, agencies, etc... you work with tell you how to look, when to change your look, when to leave it alone. Whether it's hair, makeup, weight gain or loss, you no longer have the choice in how you want to look.
2. Working odd hours until the job is done. You may start your day at 5AM and finish at 11PM.
3. Loads of travel. You may find that Monday you are in New York, and Tuesday you are in California. And sometimes it's up to you to arrange travel and pay for it. You can't depend on the company to take care of it for you all of the time.
4. The competitiveness. Not only is it hard to get into the business, it's also hard to stay in it. Even if you make it into the business, there are always so many girls trying to do the same that there are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of girls at any given time competing for one job.
5. It's up to you to build your own portfolio before you even apply, and professional photographers aren't cheap.
6. If you ever work abroad, you have to pay foreign taxes on what you earn. Sometimes the tax is as high as 30%.
7. It's up to you to get hold of a call sheet before the job. Sometimes you will be required to show up already with hair and makeup done to their specifications. If it's not, it causes problems and delays which can keep you from being hired again by that company.
8. There are a lot of scams in the industry. People know how desperate girls are to become models, and they are quick to take your money promising results they can't deliver.
9. For most models, their careers are over by the time they are 30. And with the little time they have while working, many of them didn't finish their degree, so they have to go back to college in their late 20's to early 30's.
10. For fashion modeling, the numbers are very strict. She must be 5'9" to 6', around 34B-24-34, and 14-21 years old. Anything other size may be elligable for print modeling, but it won't get you the big bucks to make it a career. Print modeling can pay as much as $250 an hour (NYC), but you might only work one day that week for 3 hours. It's not guarenteed work either, so you might go weeks on end with no job, then have a week's worth of shoots.
There are many more things a person might run across, and each person has thier own good and bad stories to tell. It's similar to any other business in that a person who works in that field may love it, while another hates it. But I think that it has a few more downsides to it since it is so selective in who can find work, who can succeed, and the trends change so often that what is beautiful today might be ugly next month.

Remember that thing called sleep?
Say goodbye to it. You'll need to master good time management skills because you never know when you might be called to do a bikini shot at 4am in a Minnesota winter.
Dump you inhibitions and face the fact you will have to show some skin. If that designer wants you to walk down that catwalk in an outfit where your nips or lower abdominal hair shows through then so what. The clothes are what the people came to see so if you reveal something you don't want it may end up in a magazine or tv. Learn to be comfortable with being nude in front of others often.
Get ready to retire early. It's a good idea to do as much modeling as you can while young because you'll get asked to do less when you're older so have something to fall back on. Not every model makes a lot of money out of it.
Be careful who you associate with because there are some shallow people in the modeling world but there are good people with good intentions. It can be very competitive or very sociable.
Make sure you enjoy it because it is NOT easy work.

To be honest, if you are not willing to treat modeling like a full time job-even when you aren't getting work- you probably won't get any. Once you take your portolio shots, you are expected to look that way at a casting, (which if you like to change your hair-style or color...it's hard). To get really good head-shots is expensive, and most agencies won't use pictures that aren't up to par.
A lot of casting agents will be blunt to the point it feels mean. They will be more critical of your body and looks than most people would be used to.
I guess the main point is: get used to rejection, because you will probably have that happen more than someone gasping when you walk in the door, and saying: 'this is our dream-model!'
These are some of the things that I experienced pursuing a modeling career, which was enough to make me loose interest, especially in the market I was in- work was limited, as was my time to pursue the jobs...
If you do get work, it pays really well, and there is a sence of pride knowing that a company wants to use you to sell their product. If you get published- it's a boost to the ego, for sure.
I hope that you have thick skin, a strong sence of self, and a great agent if you are truely interested in this field. Good luck!

Weight-all of the models are skinny on TV,this makes teens, and even preteens now want to be skinny. In fact, almost all models are airbrushed. They are probably fat,but after the photographer takes the pictures, they scan them and on the computer they just edit them,so the model will look skinny.
Prettiness-Same as the weight problem.
Why cant people realize that you dont have to be skinny and pretty?? I like Dove's Campaign for Real Beauty.
-hope this helps

For me it was the traveling, I have no sense of direction and get lost quite a bit. Also I found that the other girls can be catty. Any amount of time spent focusing on body size is never healthy, its definitely something to take into consideration.

Keeping the weight low. Putting yourself on display like a piece of meat in the grocery store. Trying to hide even the slightest imperfection.
