I don't know if they have an exact definition, but food grade materials are materials deemed safe to use with food products. For instance, food grade ceramics cannot have harmful chemicals that might leach into the food in their glazes. Also, objects that have been labeled "microwave safe" must not leach dangerous chemicals into the food when heated in a microwave.

Don't know the FDA definition however it is defined by the manufacturing process and storage, handling procedures. Chemicals can be food grade as long as they are made to the specifications (or monograph) that the FDA maintains (look at almost anything that you eat). In order to keep the "food grade" status they must also be handled and stored without the presence of toxic substances and packaged in a cGMP environment.

It means they are a safe plastic for food and will not contaminate the foods. There are so many types of 'plastic' 'nylon' etc that the mix to make the type in question has no toxins in.

In lay-mans terms. No chemicals, odors, etc will seep into the food.
