I feel that if you really want to take interest in what you will be researching, make it interesting for you. What do you like in your present life? Is there a way you can formulate a question about California history from this present day interest? For example, I love the ocean...I wonder, with the limits of travel and such, if trips to the California coast were common in particular periods of history, and how did this effect commerce.

Have you read the book Island of the Blue Dolphins? Do a research paper on the truth behind that story.

Do something on the history of the Golden Gate Bridge. I hear there is a documentary called "the bridge" that has to do with suicides comitted from jumping off the bridge. Talk about why the Golden Gate Bridge is a symobl of California, the history of how the bridge was built, why it was built...etc.

What about the missions? This is a huge part of California history that you can still see standing today. There is a ton of info out there too (and online).
