Just a guess...
1) Loss of cultral identity (religion, customs, etc).
2) Loss of young and healthy members of tribes who may of depended on them for hunting / farming / building / protection etc to the slave trade.
...And 'cos it wouldn't of been all bad...
3) Western techknowledgy and engineering bringing sewer systems / running water / law and order / health care to cities (maybe).
