Not sure whether a UK solicitor can deal with the divorce. Also does it affect how the assets are dealt with? We have a young child and I am now sole carer. What are the guide lines of US law if this is the case?

you're legally married as far as UK law is concerned, so your solicitor will need to go through the same process as they would for any divorce.

Good luck.

If you do not know where your husband is you would file a missing spouse divorce in your state of residence (where you were married does not matter in divorce proceedings). This involves placing a notice of publication in your local newspaper. He will then be given a certain amount of time to respond, if he doesn't then the divorce will be granted be default. You'll need to wait any required waiting periods if ordered by your state but after that, you will be legally divorced.
