I was an officer of Mensa from 1978 to 1983, my job was editing and producing the local newsletter. Communications officer would have been a more appropriate name for the job, since I always got called on local questions.

We discussed that very topic a lot. The only thing we ever really agreed on is that it shows the ability to take an i.q. test. Seriously.

The original i.q. test, Binet in France, was developed to test children for their ability to participate in the school system. It actually did very well at that. One had to be literate to take the test, know some math, and have some ability to reason. If you could not do the basic test tasks, then you almost certainly could not do the school work.

I don't mean to say i.q. is meaningless. It is true it does not predict success in the world. During 31 years in a corporate structure, I never had a boss whose i.q. was as high as mine. So, why wasn't I boss, right? Well, that's the way the world works. Most geniuses (i.q. over 135 or 140 depending on the test) work as manual laborers or janitors or are unemployed.

Once a man told me i.q, didn't mean a thing. I asked him, "Gerry, are you saying if there were two groups of people sitting in a hall, one group with average i.q. 50 points lower than average, and the other group with average i.q. 50 points higher than average, I couldn't tell which group was which in less than ten seconds?"

He got all red and admitted he was wrong.

I.q. is in many cases highly linked to academic activities. Physcists seldom have i.q.s lower than 150. The pace of study is geared to high i.q. students, and while those with lower i.q.s might be able to do the work, they probably can't do it within the time allotted.

125 is just a bit above average. I describe it as high enough to do most jobs or careers of interest to most people, but not high enough to alienate you from the people you will work with and for -- which may have something to do with poor success rates for high i.q. people.

While it is not true that more academic learning increases i.q. as one person has said, thinking and using your brain can slowly over your life result in an increased i.q. Brains like muscles respond to use.

There are i.q. tests which can test separately from language fluency, as well as i.q. tests which use shapes and figures instead of math/word problems. So, there can be different types of intelligence.

Iq Test Score Meanings

2016-12-17 15:50:57 · answer #2 · answered by ? 4 · 0 0

It's a measure of how well you scored on a test compared to the rest of the population. Your IQ correlations with achievement up to about 140, where scores beyond 140 are very poorly understood. Very few tests test an IQ over 150 or 160 ( an IQ of 160 is defined as 1 in 31,560!).

A score of 125 means you scored in the 95th percentile, a score about 1 in every 21 achieve.

145 would be at the 99.9th percentile, or about 1 in 1000.

It is generally assumed that a score of over 100 will mean you should be able to graduate from highschool and achieve good things! This is an average score. Scores of 115 are often associated with higher achievement, like university degrees. An IQ of 130 is usually associated with the upper tier of achievement, such as PH.D's, Nobel Prizes and amazing mental achievements, and a score of 131 is required to enter Mensa.

However, just because your IQ score is such and such does not mean you will achieve such and such. It is a very vague estimate of what you are capable at high levels.

IQ is most accurate at lower levels and makes very good predictions there (IE scores of 100 and less).

IQ stands for intelligence quotient. It basically means what is your capacity for learning. 80-100 is normal range, 125 is above average, over 140 is considered genius. Considering that you are not a native English speaker (and I'm assuming the test was in English) a 125 is a great IQ. Your actual IQ may be even higher. In terms of real life application IQ means nothing. most people who know it just use it for bragging rights (oh, my johnny scored an IQ of 189 when he was 3, such a genius!! blah blah)

IQ measures mental agility, your aptitude to quickly grasp the meaning of a question and figure out the proper response.

It is a bit like running an obstacle course: if you are good at it, then there is a good chance that you are fit. But this is not an absolute measurement, you can trip in a obstacle course, and that does not mean you are not fit.

In general, IQ level is strongly correlated with success at school.

With 125, you can hope to go to university and earn a Bachelor degree. With 145, your friend can hope to go to university and carry on to PhD level. Again, this is not a firm rule.

jack q is very wrong an IQ score is usually a score that does not change in your life, it stands for intelligence quotient and is a measure of your intelligence for you age. A normal score for any age is 100. 125 is a bit above average and a score of 167 or higher is genius.

IQ tests don't mean much these days. They were invented by a man and designed for men, that's why men tend to do slightly better on an IQ test. Some of the most intelligent people in the world had a low IQ.Including Albert Einstein, and he was a noted genius.Your score is good, but don't read too much into it.

The average IQ of the population as a whole is, by definition, 100. IQs range from 0 to above 200, and among children, to above 250. However, about 50% of the population have IQs between 89 and 111, and about 80% of the population have IQs ranging between 80 and 120, with 10% lying below 80, and 10% falling above 120.
For IQs below 120, IQ is the best predictor of socioeconomic status of any psychometric measurement.
Adults in the bottom 5% of the IQ distribution (below 75) are very difficult to train and are not competitive for any occupation on the basis of ability
Persons of average IQ (between 90 and 100) are not competitive for most professional and executive-level work but are easily trained for the bulk of jobs in the American economy.
"People with IQs between 75 and 90 are 88 times more likely to drop out of high school, seven times more likely to be jailed, and five times more likely as adults to live in poverty than people with IQs between 110 and 125. The 75-to-90 IQ woman is eight times more likely to become a chronic welfare recipient, and four times as likely to bear an illegitimate child than the 110-to-125-IQ woman."

Some experts say that a high or low IQ is not that important. It measures your overall intelligence of a wide variety of areas.
