Are they any more special than a person who can outwit a supercomputer in a game of chess?

(And for the record, I'm just curious as to why we use the word to describe them, ok?)

It's an example of political correctness. These days some people feel you should never tell things are they are, but rather sugar coat everything to make everyone feel good. Like having a school contest, and then giving everyone a prize, so there are "no losers".

I'm in the special education field now and I can see why they use the term(and not loosely either). I use the term "special needs", because their needs are a bit different from our "regular needs". We coin the term to make it special and positive instead of labeling the children/adult person dumb, or retarded.

First of all, i think that mentally handicapped is better. And even better we call them people with "special needs". The level of cultivation and integrity of a society has to do about how we treat these people

You haven't completed the phrase, it is "special needs". This phrase is in reference to the care they require to give them an acceptable quality of life and not meant to be a reference to intelligent level.
