Vikings' Anderson oldest active player

(Sept. 23, 2002) -- To put things in perspective, Randy Moss and Daunte Culpepper were both five years old when Gary Anderson kicked his first NFL field goal back in 1982. And when Anderson was activated before Sunday's loss to the Carolina Panthers, the Minnesota Vikings kicker became the oldest active player in the NFL.

Anderson, who along with Chiefs kicker Morten Andersen is playing in his 21st season, turned 43 in July. Andersen is 42. There are just four active players in the league who are 40 or older. The other two are Redskins cornerback Darrell Green (42) and Eagles punter Sean Landeta (40).

In NFL history, there have only been 36 players to appear in a game at 40 or older, the oldest being George Blanda at 48. Blanda is one of nine players on the list who is enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Darrell Green (born February 15, 1960) was a cornerback for the Washington Redskins from 1983 to 2002. Darrell was the last player selected in the first round of the famous 1983 NFL draft and spent his entire pro footall career with the Washington Redskins. He is widely considered to be one of the greatest cornerbacks to ever play the game. Darrell was nicknamed as The Ageless Wonder by his peers and the general media for his remarkable ability to maintain a high level of play well into the twilight of his career. Darrell was known for his great speed and was one of the fastest players in the NFL.

For me, Blanda would be the correct answer because he was actually a football player at the same time that he was a kicker for the Raiders, playing QB on occasion. I think there should be a rule that kickers actually have to play at least one snap at a regular position during the game or they would not be eligible to kick. Old time kickers were also players, such as Lou Groza, Lou Micheals and Les Richter.
