I think it depends on what people consider common sense. Some consider higher intellectual things as common sense than others do, so that would throw it off a bit. All and all I think it is overrated!

Common sense is the only thing that is moral in this messed up world. But, your definition of common sense may be different than someone elses. It is not overrated just overused.

Common sense is vastly underrated -- not overrated.
I have performed many system analyses and studies over the years and I have found that common sense is by far the most valuable tool available in arriving at the correct conclusion.
In fact, I would say that a good system engineer is one who sits back, ponders the question, makes lists of alternatives, and then uses common sense, supported by test as necessary, to solve the problem.
One of your answerers said people used common sense to say that the earth was flat and therefore common sense is useless. Wrong! If the people he refers to had used common sense, they would have looked at the moon and saw that it was round, and the sun was round, and the planets visible in simple telescopes were round. Common sense, had they used it, would have led them to the conclusion that the Earth was also round.

I think relying on someone else to determine the definition of common sense is overrated

It's overrated.
Common sense is something that everybody would automatically do in a situation.
My brain is wired differently. I think too much in several situations and automatically I'm wired to think a different way than others.
I've always been like that.
I remember when I was young, I got all the easy questions wrong and all the hard questions right on a test.

I think is the opposite. I have a brother who is genius , but no common sense. I end up taking care of a lot of things for him, that I think are elementary.

Common sense is soooo under-rated that it's not funny. Haven't you seen those professional types who have a bunch of letters after their name, that for every letter gained they lose a bunch of their common sense?
Common sense, horse sense, is something that needs to make a come-back in the worst kind of way.
