She has been examined by eye specialists who say they can do nothing more for her. One pupil is more dilated than the other. She is in great distress about her failing eyesight and I can't find articles or books which help her to cope

thanks to "Tall K" - useful info. She's in a psychiatric ward with depression which makes things really difficult as she has lost interest in everything. But I can introduce Talking Books and music tapes.

Since posing the question I have been in to the RNIB website which has masses of information. Also looked at the Macular Disease Society which has an excellent CD with case studies. All the answers have given me lots of encouragement so thanks to everyone

make her home as friendly as passable makes sure she knows now where things are and then it might be easier to find her way around. Don't baby her I know that sounds mean but she will have to learn how to find some things on her own, having someone who cares about her will make a huge difference in moving into a stage of life that she can have no power over, good luck and hope all turns out as well as can ,be expected for you all

Is it macular degeneration? True nothing can be done. But get her to start listening more. Talking books and radio programs. Its that stage of life we all get to where things just don't work like they used to its called aging. Hopefully she lives in a place she is very familiar with. She knows where the furniture is and she has to start putting things in there place so she knows where to find them. I know this isn't a big help but it is the facts.

If she suffers from macular degeneration she could try pycnogenol, bilberry extract, or monavie juice. The evidence for effectiveness is mostly anecdotal, but I know some people personally who have benefitted.

Can't do cataract surgery? Is it Glaucoma? Why can't they do anything?

If they really can't do anything for her, then here is some information from the American Council of the Blind: http://acb.org/
