I wore my vari-focal lenses for driving until I reversed straight into my sons bright red car. I didn't even see the thing! This was due to the lack of periferal vision provided by vari-focals. Unless you are looking directly at an object (in this case my sons car) it becomes invisible. In effect, a blind spot. It made we wonder whether half the silly accidents we see on our roads are caused by people wearing vari-focals, who simply can't see where they are going. Particularly at junctions.
Is this because they can't afford the price of a pair of driving specs, or because they can't be bothered having more than one pair?
What do you think?

Cost is always a factor but most of the discount lens and frame stores have frequent (usually atleast every 2 weeks) sales of 2 for 1 pairs of glasses. This is very popular with most people because they can keep one pair in their car or at work and have the second pair at home. Unfortunately many of my friends tend to temporarily misplace one of their pairs of glasses so are greatful to have the second pair to wear until the lost ones turn up. Sorry to hear about your car accident and hope that you weren't hurt. Good luck to you.

Probably both. Glasses can be expensive. But I know a lot of people who have trouble keeping up with one pair let alone two.

Possibly your prescription's different to mine but varifocals are exactly what I need. I hardly have a distance prescription at all but need the near vision in order to see the instrument panel clearly. Don't spectacles reduce peripheral vision anyway?

I think your varifocals must be different to mine: I can't imagine that happening.
