You need to take some courses before you can decide. Take an introductory engineering course, some math courses and some physics and decide whether this is for you. You will have to take English, humanities and social sciences regardless of your major, so why not focus on these specific engineering courses first. Most colleges allow you to be "undecided" for the first couple of years, so take advantage of this and sample as many courses and careers as you can.

If you're talking about personal satisfaction, choose whatever subject you enjoy. But if you're worried about earning potential, you need to go with a career specific degree. Engineering is just one example, theres also nursing (or anything medically oriented, really,) computer technology, animal sciences, architecture, urban development, business....I could name dozens.
I suggest to all college freshmen that you stick with a liberal arts course schedule your first year. Get used to a variety of subjects, see what you enjoy, and try and think about what you might like to do with your life. Don't decide now that you're interested in engineering when you haven't taken any engineering classes, it could be that you absolutely hate the subject. I hope you get inspired by something. :)

You can get a liberal arts degree, study ancient Celtic poetry, and go on to be perfectly happy in life. But you will probably never own a swimming pool, vacation home, or a new Lexus. Your choice.
