if it is an expensive piece, let the professionals do the job,,, they do exist..
if it is a cheap piece,, get a piece of leather (or synthetic leather if yours is synthetic,,,) , preferrably the same color... apply the type of adhesive that is used for leather (you should be able to find it at a hardware store like Home Depo... (ask for help there),
glue the whole from the underside,, if you understand what I mean,,, you might need to purposely cut the hole bigger,,, or more event (round)..........

Is it leather, vinyl or fabric?
Leather or vinyl = they have products out that repair those in the automotive sections of walmart, kmart, and most harware stores and autopart stores.
Fabric= Just find thread that is the most neutral color that matches your sofa, and stitch it like a wounded soldier in battle.

on the bottom at the back take a small patch off and sew it to the tear in the couch.

just get thread in a similar color and do a basic stitch to to pull the hole shut. or, get a slipcover, no tape though
