Lot of Allied and Nazi war criminals were hiding in Casablanca and it was the route through which lot of illegal trade was taking place. So both Nazis and Allies had a reason to fight to get Casablanca during the second ww.

It kept open the Straits of Gilbralter (as if running the straits wasn't hard enough to begin with) for Allied shipping and transportation
