You could easily be killed. I wouldn't recommend it.

I hitchhiked across the US in Spring/Summer/Fall 1990 - six months all together. It was a great time in spite of the fact that I had several scary/threatening rides. I was 17 years old and had a wonderful experience. I had little money and ended up sleeping in fields, showering in sinks, and eating out of dumpsters - good thing I had fun doing it. Others may not enjoy that so much.

That said, I wouldn't do it today. On my journey I met several fellow hitchers that had been raped, beaten, robbed, etc. What surprised me was meeting single females that did it. They all had large dogs and refused to ride separate from their pets. My bad experiences involved an attempted rape by a truck driver (yes a man tried to rape me), a robbery in the badlands of South Dakota, and several rides from mental patients and drunk drivers. I was punched in the face twice and had the pleasure of hitting two people in order to escape. I had a police officer draw on me in OH and got a ride from tweaked out car thieves in CO.

Hitching across the country is no more dangerous than walking at night through bad parts of LA, New Orleans, and NYC. If you would do that then go for it. If not... take a bus.

Summer time. A little cash. A safety net. Like a cell phone, can of mace, etc.

I would suggest Greyhound.....or buy a cheap shitty car. But if you're going to hitchhike, take precautions and if you can, a friend.

I agree that it sounds carefree and exciting, but I wouldn't reccommend it.

It might have been different in the 40s or 50s, but it's a different world now.

Please think twice, and then think again.

As an alternative, have you considered touring by long distance Greyhound bus? You could keep the freedom by simply changing your course, city by city, as you pleased.

I would say "never" is the time to hitchhike. It used to be fun; now it's deadly.
