For me here the girl's season is almost over (based on your avatar), state comps. are actually around the second week of November. By my standards you're gonna have to wait another year to join.
But I'd say go for it! I've seen a lot of people go in there without much expectations and do well, even me as a sophomore! I wanted to join my school's basketball program but once I got cut I decided to do swimming and now I'm the team's best backstroker.
If you have any area clubs like the YMCA or a swim club at your high school I would HIGHLY recommend joining one of those. At your level of age they will teach you flip turns, race starts off the blocks, all 4 of the strokes used in competitive swimming and all necessary training techniques. I did exactly this last year and it was quite something; I call it "the ultimate crash course to how you can spend 2 hours a day in a Speedo."

Yes! Join the swim team. Speed can be improved on through lots of practice, same with form. My daughter is not the fastest person on her team, nor the slowest, but she is a contributing member of a team, she loves swimming and it is great exercise, helps with other sports too in terms of endurance.
Give it a try, you will never know if you don't. Don't focus so much on the win either- take the pressure off yourself and have fun!!

Yes, the coach can help you get better. If you swim every day, you should be in reasonable shape. The problem sounds like a technical issue with your stroke.
The secret to swimming fast is a very strong smooth pull on the water with your hands. Thrashing around rapidly just wastes energy and causes more water resistance.

Yes you should. It doesn't matter wether you are fast or not! I played softball on my High School team, and I am the worst player ever! It is not about wether you are good or not, but it is about having fun doing something that you enjoy. Try it for a year and if you don't like it then find something else. Not only am I confident that you will have fun, but I am also sure that you will get in totaly awsome shape. It is an awsome sport!!

Yea, you should!! You should also join your local USA Swimming Club, because they train you harder than you swim in high school. I just started swimming (I'm in 8th grade right now) at my club and it is a really great prep for high school.

Try a community pool league first. Get your skills together before joining the school team.
