Are we entitled to know the truth, even if the truth is that we are not doing well?
I'm speaking in general terms, not necessarily about Iraq.

I don't think so. I'm amazed at how the media tells everything that's going on. Why do our enemies have to have spies when the American media tells them everything they need to know?

Same thing with a timeline for leaving. It seems like the dumbest thing ever to tell an enemy we'll be leaving in a year or 18 months.

I dont have a problem with us knowing how the war is going, but the problem is how do you report it. If you leave it up to the media then we are not doing well, if you leave it soley up to the government then everything is going great. I am also not just speaking of Iraq, but war in general. For example, my father was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam war. Part of his job was to record the tail numbers of certain type of aircraft when they left on a mission and then record certain information when they returned. He knew how many did not make it back. He said the media would constantly inflate the number and the government reports were always lower. The problem I see is that it is hard to look at a conflict and be able to tell if it is going the way we want it to or not, even if you could get acurate reporting.

Of course we should be told....why is it that so many people fail to understand that are government is run and funded by our taxes. And because of this and a document called the Constitution we as citizens have every right to ask any question we want. We are supposed to be able to have access to all information. The reason our country is so great is mainly because we are protected by the Constitution. This is why Big government is bad....We the people are being treated like children.......the government just decided that the People do not need to read, see and hear all the facts. C'mon it is an insult. If they let the People see the horrors of war we would not be in Iraq......People do not realize that People are suffering for no reason.......The president is our elected representative....He answers to us, not us to him.... I am a veteran and I hate what is going on now...People need to wake up.... they have us numbed with media and money and all the other destractions while they make money and use us......

A thougth provoking question.
I think it could be very demoralizing; for a while, the Brits were close to loosing the Second World War. If the government had told the truth, perhaps the people would have lost hope and therefore lose heart in the battle.
However in a democratic society, the people are the bosses of government and entitled to know what it`s up to. It is a delicate line and difficult to know where to draw it.

We as Americans have the right to know exactly what is going on in Iraq. Not military details but how the war is REALLY going. We as Americans have the right and the duty to question our government and it's leaders. During the Vietnam war we saw flag draped caskets on the evening news every night. Have you seen flag draped caskets on the news during this war? NO! The military and our government is censoring the truth. Do you think there would be as many supporters of this war if they saw these dead soldier's body bags coming home? That fact alone tells you that the news is being censored. So what aren't they telling us?

Not really. We aren't entitled to anything other than the rights that are only enforceable within our national borders. The soldiers will tell us a better and more accurate story, once they return from the field, anyway. The press always seems to be where they really don't need to be. Who needed to see the Marines landing in Somalia? Not me. All that did was threaten their lives, by being nosey, and drawing undue attention. For all of the good the Press does, it also does great harm.

Depends.
The war in Iraq isn't really a war. It's an occupation of a sovereign nation by imperialist war criminals. So....I think the public has a right to know what the leaders they elected are doing to betray their trust and endanger our world standing.

With a real war...like WW2.....I think the public should be kept up to date...but only to the point that operations will not be put into jeopardy by the release of sensitive information.

Now that you start to lose you start to whinge about the media. When your cruise missiles and "smart" bombs are wiping out whole streets you sit watching TV munching burgers and guzzling coke. Tough isn't it?

Sure. But not details. Our strategy shouldn't be revealed, matters of national security need to be kept secret.
