The current scientific consensus since about 2004 has been that the universe will expand forever at a rate that is constantly increasing.
Evidence shows that the outward repulsion of dark energy is increasing exponentially and will inevitably result in a universe that continues to expand faster and faster.
Current models show that all matter within the universe will probably be completely annihilated (into energy) in 30-40 billion years. Inevitably the universe will expand so fast in about 30 billion years space will become nothing but a black wasteland. Everything will be moving away from everything else so fast light will never reach you.
The ever increasing expansion of energy itself will eventually cause all material to break down, since matter is energy, it will no longer be able to exist in a matteristic form.

The universe began to slow as if it was going to stop and then begin to contract. Then it started expanding again and picking up speed. Now they think that it will just keep inflating.

We don't know. If the universe is infinite, it will expand out of existence eventually. If it is finite, it will most like contract.
First we have to figure out whether it is infinite or finite.

It depends on how the universe is constructed, and if it is infinite.
Perhaps the univers is constructed like a sphere. If everything starts at one point on a sphere and expands around it in different directions, everything will meet again at the opposite side at one point. Has everything contracted, or just re-connected?

Hi. We still do not have a firm answer. The is a huge amount of unexplained gravity usually attributed to 'dark matter' which must be accounted for. If the gravity total is high enough then the expansion may eventually stop and reverse. It not then it may not.

no. according to the big bang theory, the bang gave the energy to the planets and other celestial bodies to move apart. the bodies are still moving apart because they still possess some potentional as well as kinetic energy.
Now, at some point of time this energy will become zero. at this stage, the gravitational force (according to newton's law of gravity) will start acting and the bodies will start coming closer. As the distance will decrease the attractive force will increase and finally the whole universe will get attaracted to a point and become a black hole of infinite energy.
this point of infinite mass will possess infinite energy and will be highly unstable. this will give rise to another big bang and the cycle will continue.

Well the hindus have a vishnu text that has it expanding and contracting many times before.
I guess it depends on whether the gravity is enough to bring it back in on itself.

here is a weird one, a few years ago they found out that the expansion of the universe is speeding up, not slowing down

EXPANDING AT SPEED OF LIGHT 186,000 PER SEC,
SINCE THAT EXPANSION IS FLAT NOT CURVED
THEN IT CAN GO ON FOREVER AND A DAY.
