Start with the local paper but, be ready for problems: are you licensed, the City and the County will require separate licenses. The State will require insurance.
You will also need safety required tools IE: ladders that are electrical proof (fiberglass) etc. All for you own good but, expensive.
After all this if you still want to go into business good luck.
I worked for, with contracts, Realtors that had rentals, these had a good turnover in the city and always had work. Word of mouth through them was the best advertising.

i would question whether that many people would actually see the ad. But that rate is still pretty good and a captive audience is always a good audience. It should be part of your marketing mix - how about small space ads in your local paper in the handyman section, flyers in up and coming neighbourhoods, put up flyers at local hardware stores. A cinema ad is good for awareness, but horrible for direct response...people need to see your ad in places where they can act immediately when they realize they require a handyman's services. Talk to Tony above, or contact a local arts school asking if they would like to take you on as a project or if they have students looking for a little work for their portfolios.

Get in good with some local Realtors...word of mouth spreads and we are always referring contractors to one another, and then to the general public....One that lists and sells rehab properties as I do should never be short of work....from winterizing, changing locks, thrashing out properties, boarding up properties...and then it can lead to rehab jobs....you may have to do a few good jobs on short notice to climb the ladder, but in the long run it will be worth it. Make sure that you have insurance, answer quickly, do good work, and have reasonable prices if this is the route you take. Good luck!

The best type of advertising is "word of mouth".
Give the customer everything they expect and more.
Return all phones calls promptly whether interested or not.

Your local "rag" mags. are in-expensive. You might try Craigslist as well. Advertising is Expensive. Try a magnet sign affixed to your truck. A travelling billboard.
