in peace though pace is an interesting thought. rest in peace...there's a story about drinking ale out of lead cups. lead is poison and the alcohol created comas. people were buried alive and it was found that there were scratches on the coffin lids from when the woke and tried to claw their way out. rest in peace was a pray offered up that they were truly dead and wouldn't wake up frantic buried alive. this period in history was also responsible for the wake, and bell ringers....and dead as a doornail.

There is no way to answer such a question philisophically. A spiritual source of authority is needed, like the Bible. It states that death is a position of rest for the redeemed soul, a rest from his faithful labor. It is sometimes referred to as sleep, however there must be a consciousness because of the account Jesus gave of the rich man and Lazarus in Luke 16. Also, the Apostle Paul said that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. He was referring to those who have turned to Jesus Christ and accepted His sacrifice for their sins.

It doesn't mean rest in agony, cause that sounds worse even though your just sleeping. So try not to think to much on things that sound nice when they can sound horrific.

If you believe in Jesus Christ and believe that he suffered and died for your sins--yes you fall asleep until judgment day then he will raise you up but, Catholics (Good Catholics) do not fall asleep as they partake in the risen Body and Blood of Jesus they are merely changed in the twinkling of an eye.

i say it means "stay in your grave and don't haunt me" this of course was said without offensive language and it was much funnier when it still had it.

No, it means "now that you're dead, may you have no more crap (such as you had in life) to deal with."
