I have serious back problems and have been taking vicodin for over 4 years now. I just yesterday found out that I'm pregnant. I cannot stop pain meds as I'm unable to function without them(because of the pain). I know that breatfeeding is out of the question, but how dangerous is it to my unborn child?

This is probably something you'll have to discuss with your OBGYN, but I'm assuming it is not very good for the baby.

Vicodin is FDA pregnancy category C, meaning that it is not known whether it will be harmful to an unborn baby. Do not take this medication without first talking to your doctor.

Despite there having been no major studies on the use of Vicodin in pregnant women, medical advice states that "this drug should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus." It has been found that babies who are born to mothers who have been taking opioids regularly prior to delivery will be physically dependent, and will suffer withdrawal symptoms after birth. In mothers who are taking narcotics shortly before delivery, there may be a degree of respiratory depression in the newborn baby, especially if higher doses are taken.

All in all, it is for your doctor to decide whether or not you should be taking Vicodin during your pregnancy.

Vicodin side effects

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction to Vicodin: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
In rare cases, acetaminophen may cause a severe skin reaction that can be fatal. This could occur even if you have taken acetaminophen in the past and had no reaction. Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have skin redness or a rash that spreads and causes blistering and peeling. If you have this type of reaction, you should never again take any medicine that contains acetaminophen.
Call your doctor at once if you have:
- shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;
- a light-headed feeling, like you might pass out;
- confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior;
- seizure (convulsions);
- easy bruising or bleeding; or
- nausea, upper stomach pain, itching, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
Common Vicodin side effects include:
- drowsiness;
- upset stomach, constipation;
- headache;
- blurred vision; or
- dry mouth.
This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.

Talk to your doctor. My doctors gave me vicodin after I had my both of my kids and I breast fed, but I don't know about taking them during pregnancy. Painkillers are addictive. I'd be worried that you can't stop taking them. Talk to the doctor and see what he says. I'm sure he can come up with a safe alternative during pregnancy.

It's not safe to take during pregnancy at ALL, so you need to find another method of pain relief. It causes withdrawal and low birth weight if you take it throughout your pregnancy. Talk to your dr. and see what he recommends. but until then I'd say stop taking the vicodin. Best wishes and congrats on your pregnancy!

That's a question your doc will have to answer. As far as narcotics go, they are safer then OTC drugs most often during pregnancy. I was given vicoden during pregnancy but it was just for a short time, just a few days. Good luck and congrats.

One of the 2 ingredients in vicodin is tylenol--- that would be my concern. Call your pharmacist or doctor ASAP
